Memorial Day - A Personal Perspective

Like many of us, when Memorial Day comes around I start thinking about all of the losses this country has absorbed at the expense of acquiring and maintaining freedom and democracy for it’s citizens.  It never fails to bring an ache to my heart that so many thousands of men and women sacrificed their physical and/or mental health, their peace of mind, their mobility of movement, their own freedoms, or their lives for all of us.  I remember, as a child, visiting the cemeteries on Decoration Day…See More

Holiday Memories

I sit here this morning feeling somewhat melancholy, and frankly feeling somewhat sorry for myself, that for the first time in 20 years, I may not even see my two boys during the holidays.  William will be with his new in-laws, while David will mostly likely still be in San Diego or Camp Pendleton.  I remind myself how very fortunate I am that they are at least state side and safe, unlike many other sons and daughters who are not. So…, I got to thinking about the best Christmas gifts my children…See More

The Healing Touch of Words

I am again on a mission to reach those parents out there who have an injured or ill Recruit or Marine.  I am posting this message as a blog with the hope of reaching those who may come here to 'touch base': Sometimes, as a parent dealing with an injury or illness to a child, we retreat into ourselves.  It is a survival instinct, but yet it holds the pain, the worry, and the fear inside where it can create even more havoc.  I know.  I've been there.  So have many others.  You are NOT alone in…See More

OMG!  Do I have a swelled head!  How very kind your words are.  I to feel blessed to have "met" you here.  You have been an inspiration to me throughout my journey with our boyo.  Even though I am still a "newbie" the warmth and welcoming folks make me feel very welcome.  Take care and know you and your family are always in my prayers.  Again, Happy THanksgiving to you and yours.

Hi Jan,

Been to long , sorry for not saying "hi" earlier.  How are you  and the amazing David?  Alice?  William?   In case my mind wanders off again, The Happiest of Thanksgiving wishes to you and yours.  Our Marine is spending his turkey day in Mississippi, first time we will not have him with us:(, but that;s what "Semper Gumby," is all about right?  You more than anyone know that:)!  Have a great day!  Love to all.

Oh no!  Please tell that boy to get home before he breaks something he has not finished using yet:)!  He is and always will be a Marine.  you can't get better than that.  There are ways he could still serve the military in a civillian position.  He will find his true spot soon.  ((((HUGS)))) to all.

God Bless and Semper Fi

Hi Jan,

How is everything going?  Has the Army fixed their mistake yet?  In fact has David gotten out of the airport yet:)!  "Hurry up and wait," seems to be the military slogan for life:)!

Delta/Papa is in the middle of the crucible today and, (you'll love this) Honey, who has been so calm and collected all these months has been awake since 0030 hours:):)!  Big old Marine, a softie:).  Which is why I love him:),

Sending all good wishes to you, David, Alice and William.

God Bless, Army Strong and Semper  Fi

Good god!  I have been all over here today and just read of the latest test for David.  I cannot believe the utter inefficiency of the USA!  But it does not surprise me, many years ago my first husbands family got word he was KIA in Viernam, he actually was wounded!  Prayers for David to ocercome these latest obstacles as I know he will, it seems nothing will keep this young man down!  OOORAH David, give 'em H _ _L:)

God Bless Army Strong and Semper Fi

Absolutely Jan. I followed you during that time.... I write so many letters , don't remember for sure if I wrote to him at MCRD. But won't miss my opportunity to send some encouragement and "Thanks" during round #2!!!  Have a friend with a daughter in Army boot now as well.. So great timing... in an ARMY mode now... My fire company was part of a group today that provided an escort for a Soldier just getting back from the sandbox... It was an honor to be a part of that, and it will be an honor to be a part of your continuing journey!!!  Thank You!!!

Oh Jan I got such a laugh out of this:)!  Hope you did too.   No surprise either, if it can be messed up the military will do it and with class:).  So you sort of have an empty nest?  Is William close by?  Hope so, you need someone to fuss over as we all do.  Best to the "kids" and you.

God Bless and Semper Fi

P.S. Does the Army have a slogan like Semper FI?  If so let me know and that's how I will sign offf to you:).

Oh my goodnes!  You are one special lady and so is Alice.  to go through all you have with David and till be willing to let him go into the Army, wow!  I know our kids have their dreams but to be so determined, well, like I have said before David embodies the Marine Corp and now he will make the Army proud to have such a great person.   If they have a "person of the week" on your local newscast someone should nominate him.  I wish him all the best, God Bless him, you and Alice.  Take care.

Hi Jan,

Have a favor to ask.  One of the Moms in Delta just heard her son is being sent home.  Seems he had a severe allergic reaction to one of the shots.  Anyway, she is very upset about his career ending and I thought your experience with David might calm her a bit.  Her screen name is bareleesane.  I feel so bad for her,  wish I could help,  prayer is the thing I can offer.  Thanks in advance.  Love to all and God Bless.

Hi Jan,

Please give David my best wishes for his newest adventure.  God Bless him.  He is the embodiment of what the Corp is all about and he deserves all the best things in life.  Congrats also on his marriage, many , many happy years to both he and your new daughter-in-law.  I don't think anyone here would mind if I said, "Go Army":)!

Frankly if I were you I would be swillin' down the vino by now:):)  Oh, by the way, honey says he is only comin along as the puffs carrier:):)!

I love this place it is chock full of terrific people like you.  So far every question I have put out there has been answered by not one or two people but many helpful and kind folks.  I think I will be sticking around here for the duration of the Kevsters contract........five years:):)!  Well, good, can't think of any place I would rather be during the time.

God Bless and Semper Fi.

Hi Jan,

Hope every thing is going well for you and yours.  I was surfing again and found another blog about your son, David.  I think he is one amazing guy.  With all the bad breaks he was dealt he has done what Marines always do, adapt and adjust.  Not many young men would have adjusted so easily. I suspect he learned this not from the Marines but from you at an early age.  You have a bit on your own plate and have dealt with it in a splendid manner.

It is my since hope and prayer that both your boys and you are now sailing calm seas.  God Bless and Semper Fi.

Taking Care of America

Some of you may know that here in southern Missouri a 10 year old little girl was recently kidnapped from the sidewalk in front of her home. Two and a half hours later, the authorities found her body, and her abducter. In that short time, the child had been murdered. This is not something that occurs in our area with any frequency. Thank God for that. What I want to share though, is the reason that this man was caught so fast.

The neighbors of this family were, in my estimation, heoric is… Continue

A Christmas Poem/Gift to You

Posted on December 20, 2013 at 8:30am 3 Comments

This morning as I sat waiting for the rest of the world around me to wake up, I started writing the following.  It is not perfect, but it is my offering to all of you as a gift this Christmas:

Once upon a midnight clear

A star was shining bright

A beacon to a precious gift

The boy child born upon that night

A child to bear the battles

Of a world with little clue

Of the path he was destined to follow

In a calling strong…

The Blessing of the 85 Year Old Marine

For months now, I have been wanting to tell all of you about a gentleman I met this year. But, the words would never come together, or the timing never felt right. This morning, as I sat watching those "sappy" Christmas movies, (yes, as practical as I am most of the time, it seems I am an incurable romantic at heart), it sudddenly seemed that now is the time.

The gentleman's name is Neil. His wife became a Resident at the nursing home where I work this summer. As an employee, you… Continue
