Another Marine

Posted on December 29, 2015 at 6:35pm 2 Comments

As of December 14, 2015  we have a new recruit on his way to becoming a United States Marine.  His name is David and although we are not related he is just as much our recruit as the Corporal was.

In my job I meet many high school students.  Most are nice, respectful and funny as can be.  Some become friends and special.  David lives near our home and graduated from the same high school as our Marine.  He noticed the many pins on the vest I wear and we started talking…

WOW! I'm a Veteran: A chronicle of my first year

Posted on August 5, 2014 at 11:30am 5 Comments

I joined MFN purely by accident sometime last June 2013.  Our oldest Grandson had just shipped out to Parris Island, following in the foot (yellow) prints of my honey.  John served from 1968 through 1971 and is a Veteran of the Vietnam war.  He is the best man I know and he tried to help me get over my early anxiety about our beloved Grandson being in the military.

So I stumbled into MFN and liked what I found.  people like Nanny, my first helper, Jan whose writings are…

Semper Fidelis Marine

On Saturday last I opened our local paper as I always do, to the obituaries, a quirky habit inherited from my Mother.  I was saddened to learn of the death of one of Staten Islands most beloved and well known WWII Marine Corps Veterans, James Capodanno.  James was ninty-four and leaves behind a wife, two sons , brothers and sisters and a large loving family of Grandchildren, great-Grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

What made James stand out among Veterans however is not…

The Day of Days and Families

Posted on February 14, 2014 at 11:26am 0 Comments

This is really for all Marines and their families but today I would like to send a shout out to India/Oscar company at Parris Island MCRD and Lima company at San Diego MCRD.  OOORAH Marines!  Today is your day.  Today you graduate boot camp, today you really become United States Marines.

Yes these young men and women have already technically earned the coveted Eagle, Globe and, Anchor after completeing their Crucible.   Today is the day they are recognized not only…

Hi Mair!

I have not been to the site in quite a long while. My Marine arrived home on leave Thanksgiving Day and returned to Okinawa the day after Christmas. Those 30 days were so fulfilling that I just held them as a wonderful memory. So please forgive my slowness in receiving your friend request. The Marine Family is just that...a family. I'm so thankful for this site and for the opportunity to meet moms like you!

Hi Mair,

Thank you for your note of congratulations.  He has one more day of leave before we drive him to SOI on Tuesday. :(  It definitely went by too fast.  He and his girlfriend got engaged today, so the emotions are really running amok around here. :)

Hi Mair,

Just read your response to my comments on your blog.  While surrounded by Marines, my dad & husband were in the reserves, so I didn't have the 24/7 life of a Marine brat or spouse.  This is all very new to me, but I'm learning fast. I'm a big reader and love to learn, so I've already gone through all the info about boot camp on recruitparents.com. I've been on the scheduled chat 4 times now.  I'm still learning, but have been able to answer some questions from other parents thanks to all that reading.  I may very well be interested in becoming a monitor on here, but would like to get a bit more knowledge myself.  I'm letting every new recruit parent I meet on-line (other sites) know about MFN and trying to pass on advice to the newer parents based on what I've experienced in the past few weeks.  Thanks again! Cindy

Hi Mair, thank you so much for checking in! It's been a DAY! I'll get to that in a minute.
My son graduated from ITB on March 11 and is stationed at Camp Horno. He's happy about that! In a few months he's being deployed (but I'm not sure if I can say on here where). Hopefully, he will be safe! So proud of my Marine!
I still miss having him home but, he has moved on to the next phase of his life! All normal stuff.
I think I told you my Mom has been on Hospice since July. I'm waiting to hear from Hospice in the morning but today they said she may only have about 48 hours left. This past year has been an emotional roller coaster!
Thanks for checking in! I'll keep you informed!

Mair, I can say with certainty that leave can be rolled over. Zack's rolled over when he was on the 31st MEU.

Hey, all! Hope you fine folks are all well and that our Marines are safe and sound. Mine is teasing us back in Ohio by telling us how he's suffering with the cold weather (75-80) at 29 Palms California. I guess he's inherited his father's sense of humor... Blessings to all you friends. I thank God for all of you and for our Marines. Semper Fi and Semper Gumby!!
