Another Veterans Day Ceremony

Posted on November 14, 2013 at 5:00am 2 Comments

I just read a heartwarming story and it's a good way to start your day off - to have your faith in mankind restored.  On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, another ceremony was taking place, the funeral of a 99 year old WW2 Veteran, Jellicoe Percival.  His obituary had stated that he died alone, having never married or becoming a father and he had outlived all of his close friends. His funeral home directer had feared that no one would come & had asked that any Service…

HI Paul,

My son ships June 16.  We already had a 'test drive' in August and he was sent home from the hotel as a paper wasn't signed off on by his physician.  What started off as a 2-3 week max detainment until he could jump into the next rotation turned into several months and he had to find another job.  He thought it was only going to be a short term one but it turned out to the his ideal civilian job of welding.  While he waited for MEPS, several trips to see his recruiter, etc. he got certified and then his boss was forced to retire early.  The next week, my son got the call he could ship sooner and he had to tell the poor guy who had only been in the saddle for a week.  It turned out well, as he is a reservist and only was concerned that my son would return to the job once he had everything completed.  My only question right now is how many times do they swear in? I know he did at MEPS once, and then I thought he did just before they left in August and then came back home. I am DYING to get it on film if they do it again.  He tells me, "MOM - NOBODY goes to those, and no parents are standing there as the busy pulls away so just drop me off at the recruiter's office."  I think that it's cooler to have your girlfriend bawling her eyes out in a parking lot than see your Mom's lip quivering and knowing that every other time in your life, you could hug her but that bus isn't stopping for you this time. I promised to suck it up at least until I got into my truck LOL He will be at PI during the hottest months of the year, but his friends have assured me there is a black flag/mandatory hydration process in effect.  As a security scare - I am a bit nervous about the anniversary of September 11 travel (graduation is scheduled 9/12).

Good morning Paul,

I must apologize for my over long blather message the other day! :)  I bet you ran for the hills!:)  Have you finished reading it yet?:):):)  It's just sometimes when I get started I can't stop:)  Honey says it's a ladies thing:):).  He's right:)! Blame it on my Mother, she always said I loved to blather:)  She was right also, I just love to listen and talk.  Have a wonderful day "see" you later.

God Bless and Semper Fi.

Hi again,

Forgot to mention a very important thing, the name I use here is for my honey.  He is the reason our boyo came up so well.  The best Dad/Grandpa I have ever met.

Hi Paul,  I just read your great stories about your son, Tom, and his best friend, Sean, in the 'Remember When..." topic and had to check out your profile page.  I noticed of all of the groups you've joined you still need to check out the 1/7:

http://marinefamilynetwork.com/group/17marines

and, maybe, our general Afghanistan deployments forum:

http://marinefamilynetwork.com/group/afghandeploy

Thank you for your previous service to our country.  Adding my prayers for your son and the 1/7's safe return.
