Enlisting support

Five years after they joined the Marines, one of the Shipp twins is home and thankful for help from family and veterans programs

September 10, 2011

Five years ago, fraternal twin brothers from Hauser Lake realized their lifelong dream of enlisting in the U.S. Marines. They were eager to “see action” in Iraq or Afghanistan and defend their country.

The Spokesman-Review followed Robert and Matthew Shipp as they graduated from high school, went through the rigors of boot camp and deployed to the Middle East. They had longed to be Marines since they were boys, and the wars that erupted in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks gave them the combat experiences they craved.

Thanks for the Shipp update. I have followed them from the start, but missed this one. I am from Spokane so we are neighbors.

A very thoughful article in today's Everett Herald:

LAKE STEVENS -- The crowd's shouts were lighthearted.

Jordan Finley Returns Home
Sarah Weiser / The Herald
Jordan Finley deployed to Iraq four years ago with the 1st Battalion 8th Marines. He then deployed to Afghanistan. When his time of service ended in June, he returned to his childhood home in Lake Stevens. Since then, he has been readjusting to life outside the service. Here, he looks over at his girlfriend, Whitney Pahls, as he stops at a red light in Lake Stevens after picking her up from work at Perry Ellis.
