My son is still at Parris Island and I'm trying to gather information on SOI.  What will he be allowed to take with him?  Car, cell phone, etc.  Also, how long is SOI ?  I can tell by many of the postings that they don't always start their training when they report.  We've been through that with our oldest son, who's in the U.S. Navy.  If there is a thread already started with this information I was unable to find it.  Any information will be appreciated.

Thanks.

They will not be allowed to take a car.  They can have their cell phones and laptops...at least our group was.  Will your son be infantry (ITB) or going on to another MOS (MCT)?  The length of time they are there and the liberty time they have will depend on that.  The ITB guys are there for about 9 weeks and our son had liberty most weekends.  They were allowed to leave base and wear civvies...we live close enough that we went over almost every weekend to hang out with him.  The MCT guys are only there for about 5 weeks, and they typically only have free time on Sunday and they cannot leave base or wear civvies.  They will spend a lot of time out in the field, and during that time they are not permitted to have their phones.  As for the gear, etc that they need, they will get a list prior to graduation.  If your son is flying make sure he has his uniform and other items he needs to check-in with him in a carry on...luggage does tend to get lost!

Your son will have specific information on what he needs to take back to SOI. In short he will need EVERYTHING he was issued in boot camp, this includes boot camp glasses if they were issued. Failure to have all issued gear may cause a delay until missing items are replace. Personal items should include two changes of civilian clothing to wear while on liberty. Most will take a cell phone for use while on liberty. Personal computers are discourage as they have little time to use them, little space to store them, limited internet access, and most instructors will not allow them to be recharged in the squad bays. Personal vehicles ARE NOT allowed at SOI.

SOI is actually two different schools. Marines who have an infantry MOS(03xx) will attend ITB, it is 58 days in length after getting assigned to a training company. All other Marines attend MCT, it is 29 days in length after getting assigned to a training company.

My son was also able to take a Cell phone, and two other electronics.  Make sure he takes at least to civilian outfits,..as everone stated above, he will get to leave base.  Good luck!  SOI is very hard training!!

Yes, after SOI then they move on to their MOS school, or are assigned to a unit, depending on their MOS. Personal vehicles are not allowed at most MOS schools.
