I received the letter from the SDI. I didn't get a letter from him almost until a week later. That is why I said I wouldn't wait for his letter before writing.

That's what I meant Carol... wait to hear from my son and then I will write. Some are writing and sending already based on recruiters telling parents what platoon their son/daughter is in. I am so anxious for him this week... knowing the intensity of it based on what I've ready! Prayers for all recruits!!

I meant when you get the letter. I don't have my son's platoon number to even write.By the time we get the letter and then mail one they will have been there two weeks.

I wouldn't wait to send a letter. My other son ,who is also in the Marines, was delayed a week because of swelling of the feet. I received the letter from his SDI with his platoon number on Thursday and the very next day, after mailing my first letter to him, I received a call that he was delayed because he was in medical. He never received that letter and I had to wait for another letter from his new SDI a week later. He wrote me a letter while in medical and he was wondering why he had not heard from us. He was as eager to hear from us as much as we were eager to hear from us. He even wanted us to get a different colored envelope so he could identify quickly when he received mail. I think all the recruits anticipate mail. They have no concept on time and barely know the date. I sent him a calendar that I printed and the training matrix so he had an idea of date and what he was going to face each week. He found these helpful. So I would write ASAP because I am sure they are all extremely homesick.

I don't know if it's true but I have been told that they don't recommend that you send letters the first 2 weeks and that the DI can make our recruit's life miserable if they receive something too soon... might get in trouble. :( I am going to wait to get the information directly from my son to keep him safe.

The recruiter gave me my sons address today when I asked him that's how I received it early.
Comment by Jersey Girl (Karen) on March 15, 2013 at 12:26pm

We haven't gotten anything in the mail, but were told by his recruiter that it was "possible" to contact him by the end of the week and they could have the address (I'm thinking he meant the platoon number specifically?). We havent' been pestering him, but did phone him yesterday afternoon, and he gave us the address. We knew when he left that our recruit was in Mike Company, 3rd Battalion.

That is correct Carol. Not sure how these other parents are getting those platoon numbers because they haven't been assigned yet. The recruiters wouldn't know that until it is entered into the computer next week.

Cynthia my son that has gone thru bootcamp in Sept said he didn't know his platoon until Saturday, when he met his SDI. I didn't get the letter until the following. Thursday.

Since they  just shipped on Monday most of them probably don't have a plt number yet. They usually get assigned to them on the first Friday or Saturday after they arrive.
