I just booked a flight for my son to come home in a couple of weeks and wanted to share the great discount that I found.  After months of searching through Kayak, etc. I went to the Continental website and found a link for military airfares. When you go to their website, simply go to "products and services", click on "Travel for Military and Government Personnel" and then select the type of travel.  I selected "Flight Reservations for Military Leisure Travel".  It will take you directly to the booking page.  We saved about $800!!  Hope this works out well for someone else..good luck!!

What a great tip, thanks for sharing! Unfortunately my son was just home this summer, so I don't think he has any more trips in the near future, but I will definitely tell him to check it out when/if he starts shopping for airfare again. If I'm not being too nosy --- what was the original fare quoted vs the discounted fare and to what city was he flying? Mine flew from Oki to Chicago for about $1400 this last May - he did pay the extra $$ for flight insurance and wanted a direct flight, so was willing & happy to pay a little extra so he could make the most of every minute of his vacation.

I hope you enjoy your son's visit home -- It is such a thrill to see them!!!

Mine will be flying into St. Louis and has to go through another city..no direct flights from Tokyo to St. Louis. The lowest fare I could find was about $2900 before flight insurance. The flight I just booked through Continental was about $2100.  It was also the only airline that offers a Military Discount online.  Apparently they are the airline of the U.S. Govt for 2011, so I don't know how much longer this discount will last.  I hope you had a wonderful time when you son was home and, like my son always tells me...he'll be back in a flash :-)

"I'll be back in a flash" ... I like your son's attitude ... My son's final goodbye is always "see you soon" -- gotta love those attitudes, I think it helps all of us survive  :)

@ 8489mama, THAT IS A GREAT SAVINGS WITH CONTINENTAL, THANKS FOR THE TIP ! I HAVE BEEN ON FAREBUZZ AND THAT IS A GOOD WEBSITE ALSO. MY SON CALLED AND SAID HIS CORPORAL WILL BE HELPING HIM WITH FINDING A FLIGHT HOME FOR HIS LEAVE , I SEND MY SON ALL THE FLIGHT TIPS THAT I FIND. EVERYTHING IS SO VERY EXPENSIVE ! HOPING TO SEE MY SON IN A MONTH , I HAVENT SEEN HIM SINCE APRIL 2010 , HE HASNT BEEN HOME SINCE DEC 2009,,, HE IS SO VERY HOME SICK.  I SENT MY SON YESTERDAY IN HIS BOX A SEMPER FI GUMBY " ALWAYS BE FLEXIBLE WHEN IT COMES TO THE MARINE CORP"

YOU ALL ENJOY YOUR TIME WITH YOUR MARINES !!

Alot of the price depends on when you Marine travels. In July Jake  came home for about 1700.00 from Oki. It would have been alot more for an August flight so he planned for July.  He flew  from Naha to Tokoyo then to Newark NJ. He then caught a connecter  to Maine. If you can avoid August the price should be cheaper from what our research has shown. Hope everyone is having a great summer and it is good to see so many Marines being able to get home. I hadn't seen my son for a year, how grown up and more responsible he was, yeah!!! Mom's job is alittle easier :)
Wow, thanks for the great tip!  We will probably use it to get our Marine home for the holidays as he hopes to get leave.  (First time home for holidays since 2008!!)

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE TIP ON FLIGHTS 8489MAMA ! I JUST BOOKED A FLIGHT WITH CONTINENTAL AIRLINES CAME TO 2,268.10 CHEAP FOR THE END OF THIS MONTH MY SON WILL BE FLYING HOME .. HOORAHH !!

I LOOKED AT FARE BUZZ, ORBITS AND SO ON FOR MONTHS AND THIS ENDED UP THE CHEAPEST.

NOW IM COUNTING DOWN THE DAYS UNTIL I GET TO SEE MY SON !!! HE WILL BE HOME 25 DAYS :)  SO EXCITING,  MY HUSBAND & I  ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT KNOW WHEN HE IS COMING HOME, WE WILL BE  SURPRISING THE REST OF THE WHOLE FAMILY ! MY SON HASNT EVER MET HIS NEW LIL NIECE YET EITHER, IT SHALL BE A GREAT HOME COMING !

I am so happy it worked out for you Chevylady!!! I have noticed that even Continental's fares fluctuate quite a bit day to day, but we all know that finding these things becomes a second (or third or fourth...) job for us-lol.  I love the idea of the surprise visit!  We were thinking of doing that, but talked him out of it and now we're all going to surprise him at the airport.  He comes home in 2 days and thinks my husband and I are the only ones coming.  For him it's been one year, one month, one week and one day since he's been home (not that I'm counting).

Have a WONDERFUL visit with your son and CONGRATULATIONS on your new addition, a granddaughter, if I figured that out right :-)

Hi:

My son is looking to come home on leave in Nov, we are seeing how high the prices of air is from Okiniwia.  I am very shocked at how much tax there is on the flights, seems like the tax is over half the cost of the flight, I found a flight for around $800 than go to the final costs and it is around $1700!!  Is there any advice on how to avoid this high tax??  Like flying in to another country??  I see Farebuzz and Orbitz seem to have the best price, but when I spoke to the military representive at Delta, she said you always want to book as military because then if their leave gets canceled it is refundable which would be really good,  is this the same if you go through Orbitz or Farebuzz is this always a rule for military?  Thanks for any advice, I know that is a lot of questions.

Tucker14,

Other members have given good advise above.  Have you read some of their posts? Yes, it's always good to be able to exchange the ticket for little or no cost.  The Corps can change your Marines plans at anytime.

Yes, you want to be sure you can exchange your tickets!! We took out insurance so if the trip got cancelled we got the airfare back. The insurance only cost about 180.00.  As I said earlier, Jake didn't get final approval for his trip until the Wednesday before he left on Friday. He had put in his request in January! There is no way to avoid the tax that I know of, just part of life these days!!
Thanks for the replies,  I did read the other post and have found a ticket from Okiniwia to Minneapolis for $1500 which includes the taxes.  Which seeing what some of the rest have paid here is proably a good price, but it just bothers me to have to pay over half of that to taxes, and some people think we have it bad in the United States, wow the Japanesse must pay a lot of taxes!!  I will have to make sure to get the insurance, so @JakesMom what did you do if he did not get final approval for his trip till that late?  Wait to buy your plane tickets, or buy them earlier and hope with the back up insurance?  When should I buy as soon as he puts in for his leave?
