Thank you Iansdad ,I thought that was an extreme fail rate and my suspicions were what you just mentioned.I wont say a thing, as Lance Corporal would be a nice title to graduate with, meritoriously of course. ! Oh and you were right on the number of Marines in class ....two.(from a former post of yours) not sure of the class size though  Ooh-Rah !

In the USMC firefighting world, firefighting is divided into base and airfield. The base or structural firefighting is normally provided by civilian employees, while the airfield (Crash, ARFF, CFR) is provided by military personnel with a few civilians scattered in for continuity. Below is a list of locations that you could assume a USMC 7051 would be assigned. It is not a complete list.

MARINE CORPS AIR STATIONS (Air Stations are actual bases, although they may be a physical part of another base.

MCAS Cherry Point, NC

MCAS Beaufort, SC

MCAS Cherry Point, NC

MCAS Futenma, Okinawa, Japan

MCAS Iwakuni, Honshu, Japan

MCAS Miramar, CA

MCAS New River, NC

MCAS Yuma, AZ

MARINE CORPS AIR FIELDS (Air Fields are part of and under the control of a base)

MCAF Quantico, VA

MCAF Pendleton, CA

MCAF Twentynine Palms, CA (Manned by representatives of units deployed for training)

MARINE CORPS AUXILIARY LANDING FIELD

MCALF Bogue, NC (Used for USMC specific carrier type training).

pvemt, I think that his statement of 80% fail rate is dead wrong. I think it is more like an 80%-20% pass to fail. I went through the USAF Fire Basic Academy, which became the DoD Fire Academy, in 1979, before they moved to Goodfellow. I also attended Garland (the name of the Fire Academy is the Louis F. Garland Fire Academy) for several advanced courses over the years. They would NEVER tolerate that high of a failure rate. Personally, if they are failing over 20%, then something is wrong, either with the student screening program or the instruction, and they've been doing this way too long to be making those errors. My guess, AND DON'T PASS THIS ON TO HIM-THEY HAVE A REASON FOR TELLING THEM THOSE NUMBERS, is that it is psychological stressing to make them work harder. Remember that these are young Marines, and one of the motivational techniques is emphasize the possibility of failure, since no Marine can accept failure.

Oops, I accidentally deleted my last comment :( .  Moomyproud, my son is stateside, but there were maybe half the guys he was at Goodfellow with that were stationed overseas.......it all depends on where the Marines need them.  They typically find out where they will be stationed maybe two weeks before graduation.  Beware if your son finds out sooner than that.......because it could change!  My son found out his PDS about 6 weeks before graduation.  We thought that was pretty early, but were happy with where he would be stationed.  Then, about two weeks before graduation, his orders changed.  :(  We were all upset about it, but it has turned out to be a good thing in the long run.  He is further from home, but has grown up and matured more than if he was closer, in my opinion.  If he ever gets stationed closer to home in the future, I will be thrilled, but for now I am thankful for technology that we can keep in touch :)  Good luck to your son, and also to you as you go through all this newness!!

My son picks up tomorrow with one other Marine ,the rest are Army ,Air Force etc. States 80% fail rate ? Surly not our Marines and incentive of Lance Corporal if they go through class with a 95% pass rate. 80 % fail rate seems high to me and I think its a motivator to do good. He was also told the program will be shutting down soon? Maybe to revamp it if it really does have an 80% fail rate . Any one hear those rumblings?

This is to Bearaholic, My son has been at GF since the first of March.  I'm just getting curious about where he will go next.  I'm sure no one really knows for sure til they get orders but do you think he will go overseas?  Where all has your son been?

Comment by pvemt on April 2, 2015 at 2:33pm

He made it to base . It will be nice if the Marines are housed together. He was doing odd jobs at Pendelton while waiting for his physical ,so he will be used to it at G.F :) I hope the classes start soon for the sake of the boys . :)

So far, he isn't doing too much. He said some days he is part of a work party (I think that's what he called it). So they are doing some odd job and cleaning. When we spoke with him last night, he said they were sent back to their house (barracks?, bunkers?.... I'm not good with remembering the lingo yet :) He also said that since he's been there for two weeks now, he will be able to have off-base liberty this weekend and he is looking forward to that.
