I don't believe I'm speaking out of turn with this info but for CH 53 squadrons their PDS is either New River, Miramar, Hawaii, or Okinawa(spelling?) from the PDS they can be deployed to other parts of the world on a MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) or a overseas base.

PDS (Permanent Duty Station) is where your Marine is based, kind of like his 'home base.'

Marines get stationed wherever the Marine Corps needs them at that time. From their permanent unit they then will deploy to wherever it is they are deploying to if it applies.
In a 4 year contract, usually most Infantry Marines may deploy at least twice.

my son was at Geiger as well!  you're right, directly across the road.  Is the PDS the primary spot they stay in for the duration of schooling before they go overseas?  I'm trying to brace myself!

When my daughter was at her MOS school at New River, she went straight to schooling after walked across the road from Geiger to New River....she was there for about 6 weeks & then went directly to her PDS in San Diego. For her she had more of a hands on schooling at Miramar Air Base, she started as a Flight Line Mechanic on the CH53 & after 3 years in the Corp has advanced to Air Crew & working on more advancements in her field. Good Luck!

Hello- my son just graduated MCT and is now going to New River for his schooling.  Still too early to tell if he will need to wait to class up.  Just wondering, how long is this schooling and where do they go next?

Comment by DianaA1965 on August 7, 2014 at 4:43pm

All through bootcamp and MCT our son was told he would be going to Pensacola for aviation A school, but during the last week of MCT he was redirected and is now at New River, Jacksonville NC for 6116 work on the MV-22 Osprey helicopter.  He will start school in September for 86 days and then sent right to his permanent duty station.  I am learning that things change fast and then there is some waiting for classes to start.  Good luck to all.

Thank you Keri, that helps out a lot. So I take it that A school is in Pensacola?

Welcome Huntersdad and many thanks for your years of service in the Corps.

Here is what I have learned about this aircraft MOS:
"A" school is learning the electrical components. There is "O" strand, "AO" strand and "I" strand. Whatever "O" and "AO" can't fix, "I" strand gets it. Once a Marine passes "A" school, he/she will be assigned an actual MOS (the last two numbers of his/her MOS) and then goes on to "C" school to learn about and work on their specific MOS (aircraft).
Some Marines get a specific aircraft to work on or are assigned specific components. They work on the electrical parts that make helicopters and aircraft run.

Depending on what "C" school your Marine is assigned, it can be another 2-6 months of schooling.
"C" school is the aircraft specific school. All but two schools are on the east coast. Hueys are in San Diego and C-130s are in Little Rock.

The Marines who have this MOS are required to enlist for 5 years instead of 4 because of the amount of schooling they have to do.
Best wishes for your Marine through his schooling,
1~Keri (HCC)

Most of the posts I see are from 2013, so that should mean that by now most everyone will have experienced what I am about to go through. My son is about to complete MCT and is assigned the MOS of 6111. He was told that he would be going to Pensacola for his first school and would have two more after that. He had to extend his contract to five years due to the length of the training. I am looking for any information about his schools, length of each one, location, etc., anything will be a help. I did three years in the Corps, but mine was in artillery, so it was short and sweet in school, only about 7 weeks then off to Okinawa. This helicopter schooling is uncharted waters for me. Thanks.
