Mike after your grandson finishes boot camp, he will then go to ITB (Infantry training) at SOI (School of Infantry) for another 8 weeks. After that graduation he will go onto SF training in VA for another 6 weeks.  My son just graduated ITB yesterday and arrived in VA this morning.  You can Google Security Forces and there are several sites that give you information on what they do.  Depending on the type of security clearance he is given, he could be doing anything from guarding an Embassy, to guarding Nuclear weapons.  They serve a two year period for SF and then serve two years in the Fleet. Hope this helps!

There is another link on this site that you might find helpful...there are several parents on here who have kids who are heading into SF training with my son, as well as a Mom whose son  has already been through the training.  She has been very helpful to us parents with her prior experience! Here is the link http://marinefamilynetwork.com/group/mos03/forum/topics/security-fo...

Where is your grandson in boot camp, PI or MCRD? Good luck to him :)

term is MCRD "Marine Corps Recruit Depot" locations are San Diego, CA or Parris Island, SC. Some people abbreviate to MCRD SD or MCRD PI

Yes.. My mistake... new at this... terms are different fro  USAF.. retired E8... 36 years service.   What I was trying to see is what type of training or duties he would be doing. Based on some google search it is guarding facilities to stand guard by the Presidents Helicopter to FAST.

Yes, Mike that is my understanding as well. There are other facets of this group that do things like re-establish breached security, anti-terrorism, as well as guarding high value naval installations. Sounds interesting...of course then there is your Marine 911.."Gunslingers" I think I read that they are called...that's your FAST. There are different areas and there is much to learn on how they are selected or placed...not to mention trained. Hold on for the ride...lol  More to the point of your question I guess...I will have to remember where I saw it, but there is a link that shows the additional training opportunities and qualifications that they can have to "climb the ladder". My son said they were told that is possible to rank up fairly quickly if they put in the effort. Maybe Richard can help out with that info...Richard? I have just googled and read so much it will take me a while to find it agoan I'm sure.

Thanks that would help..   It looks like a good career with a better advancement opportunities.

I agree...and it also will make them more marketable when the time comes for them to exit an active military career. I'm not too fond of the infantry situation, but it doesn't seem to bother my son at all.
