Marine War Games Drive Wholesale Amphibious Shakeup

By Carlo Munoz
Published: November 4, 2011

Washington: A series of war games led by a special Marine Corps task force could dramatically change the way the service fights their way from ship to shore in the future.

The Marines' Amphibious Capabilities Working Group kicked off its first war game this week at Marine Corps Headquarters in Quantico, Lt. Gen Richard Mills, head of Marine Corps Combat Development Command told me. This is the first of two the working group will conduct over the next few months, Mills said. This week's war game will test and examine core Navy and Marine Corps tactics and see how they can be adapted to the modern battlefield. The follow-on war game will explore how other services and "governmental agencies" can sharpen those core capabilities, Mills added.

The Marines’ New Target Dummies Ride Segways

By Andrew Tarantola

November 30, 2011

For years, military live fire exercises have relied on either stationary or pop-out targets but they don’t really simulate enemy movements—they just sit there, waiting to be shot. These targets, newly developed for the U.S. Marine Corps don’t; they move, behave, and react just like real combatants. Well, combatants who ride Segway scooters.

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. — Deep in the woods northwest of main side, here at Camp Upshur, a technological revolution quietly has been taking place. Weeds and brush on the grounds of the old Officer Candidates School have been cleared to make room for modern white trailers and tents where more than a dozen training simulators hum and spin for Marine reservists training for deployment.

MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va., - Stress is a part of everyday life. However, due to increases in operational tempo and multiple combat deployments many Marines face a greater risk of developing combat stress, post traumatic stress disorder and survivor’s guilt.
