That's a tough one. Camp Pendleton has a volunteer programs office but mainly they connect Marines with volunteer opportunities on and off base. A couple organizations you could check with would be the ASYMCA, MOM4USA, and Jewish Family Services Hand Up program. You could also just ask your son if he had any friends that would like to join you for dinner one evening. I'm sure they would appreciate it.

Our family is thinking of visiting our son at the end of August/Labor Day time frame.  We are wondering whether we could participate in some sort of volunteer opportunity while we are out there.  Is there anything going on that we could do to help out Marine families?  A care package stuffing activity perhaps?  Or helping out at a Veteran's organization?

My son enjoys visiting the Sugar Shack (San Clemente?) to eat.  He says their breakfasts are terrific!

My son is currently on leave.  I was asking him yesterday where he does most of his shopping.  He told me the MCX.  I have been to visit a couple of times and there are many restaurants in Oceanside.  My son's personal favorite for a gift is an ITunes Card.

There are nice seafood restaurants on the piers in both Oceanside and San Clemente that have a great ocean view.  Can't remember the names, something like Fisherman's Wharf.

Joe's Crab Shack is a popular restaurant in Oceanside. Most of the major restaurants - Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse - are close to base. You could use Yelp to pin point one close to your son's location as Pendleton is huge. I've eaten at Johnny Rockets on base and there are 2 Dominos pizza locations on base as well.

If you want a list of all the restaurant on base, search for the MCCS Camp Pendleton webpage. You could also consider an MCX gift card which would be good at any of the exchanges including the gas stations and some of the recreational facilities.

Hello everybody, my son's 21st birthday is coming up.  Any suggestions on gifts?  I was thinking maybe a gift certificate to a restaurant but I have no idea what they have on base or what is near them.  If anyone has first hand knowledge of what's offered on base or nearby base would be helpful.

Thankyou Jean, exactly what I neened to know, sorry it took me this long to " Report myself here" as you can imagine, I have been very bussy with the shipping and my job, but well, every thing worked out good, my son received his car yesterday and now I feel so relieved, thanks everyone for your help.

Calliej, my son is at Mainside too.

Hi LILLY,

Lots of questions! I had the same about a year ago when we shipped our son a truck to CP. We used a transport company that the dealer used - where the truck was purchased.  I think it varies by insurance company and home state, but for us in Massachusetts here is what we did.

The truck is registered in my name (the mom) and our insurance company knows the primary driver will be our son, a Marine, at CP.  The dealer took care of the registration (for home state) and arranged for all the insurance (sort of a combo deal for MA).   Our son got it inspected in CA at local dealer, required for CA emissions testing, and then got the base sticker. This all took about 3 weeks from arrival of truck on base.  As for yearly inspection at home state, this is waived while driver is in the military and stationed away from home base.

So far we have had no issues.:)
