I have a question regarding transportation.  I hope someone can help me.  My son is taking the Amtrak train to Camp Pendleton on Monday, April 14th to report to his PDS.  His train arrives around 7:00pm.  My question is, how does one get from the Amtrak Station in Oceanside to Camp Pendleton?  Is the Oceanside train station the best station to get off of?  All the cab companies have said the cost of a cab will be between $35-45.  His train ticket was only $40.  Please help.

Replies to This Discussion son has been at CP for 2 yrs now. Yes, Oceanside is the best station to get off at. unfortunately the cab ride does cost just as much or more than the train ticket. If he knows anyone at CP, I would suggest that he ask them to pick him up and that he offer them gas will be cheaper. If not, then he will just need to take the cab to the base. I'm not sure if cabs are allowed on base. If not then there is a bus he can take on base, I'm just not sure how late it runs. You can also call the base and ask for advice.
Hope this helps a little!
Thank you for letting me know. I can't believe the cost of a cab ride. I'm sure once he gets settled he will be able to find rides to and from Amtrak.
Here is the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton web site. There's checking-in info listed under personnel.

My thanks to your Marine for his service and best wishes on getting checked in to his unit.

Oceanside is probably the closest unless he'll be at one of the northern camps. Then San Clemente is closer. The North Country Transit District runs a couple of buses on to base so that may be an option. The base also has the Liberty Launch shuttle service, so he could also call them to try to arrange something.

In addition, he will file a travel claim once he checks in. He will be reimbursed for his travel expenses, so he should get and keep his receipts.

Thank you all for your advice. I will feel a lot better one he gets to CP, checks in and gets settled.
