Hello all,  My Marine will be heading out on a meu this fall from the west coast.  Was wondering if anyone had been out to see one depart.  I'm looking for guidance as to where to stay and how long to allow.  Thanks.  Frances

I don't have experience with this but maybe there is something in the MEU groups. Here are the Expeditionary Units. The west coast MEU's would be I MEF.

My best wishes and thanks to your Marine!

My son is on a MEU now that left from San Diego.  I didn't go out for the departure but am going for the return sometime soon. How long to stay is iffy because the departure date can change up to the week before (same with return).  For the return we booked a week time-frame based on tentative dates and are hoping that the actual homecoming will hit during one of those days.  I know a lot of people are doing the same.  There are lots of hotels around base, but the Miramar Inn on base is supposed to be great!  Your Marine will have to sponsor you,  but that just means they have to sign for you.  I would definitely check out the MEU boards for better info.  I was (and still am!) a little lost with it all, but my son got assigned to go at the last minute so we didn't get a lot of the beforehand info.

Another thing to check into, see if they are having a live feed of departure/arrival. I know they were trialing that a couple of years ago.

Thanks to both of you.

Are you in contact with the MEU FRO? Or his Unit FRO?

Yes, to the unit FRO.  No, to the MEU FRO.  The unit has a facebook page where we gather and then the FRO lets us know what she knows.  My son went twice to Iraq, so I know how those departures and homecomings go, but this will be his first MEU.  Would love to go see the ships leave.  Frances

The MEU will have a facebook page too. Some are more informative than others.
