An Outreach Program of MarineParents.com
A place for families of deployed Marines to Connect and Share. This is your place to share your joys, your fears.. to talk to ease anxiety over your Marine's deployed status or just chat.
First, our philosophy regarding social media groups is in the first paragraph of our guidelines above the #1 guideline. Here is an excerpt:
"...Our mission is to provide a safe and informational Place to Connect & Share® for Marine Corps families. Since 2003, we have established high standards for both safety of our troops and accuracy of information shared; The Guidelines promote that. With so many social networks available that have little understanding of OpSEC or military, our mission is more critical than ever. Military families need to communicate with one another in environments free of rumors, misinformation, or fears that someone else may share something that could potentially harm our Marines and recruits...."
Guidelines 2 & 3 indicate no last names - for privacy reasons. That's the same reason we don't share any names submitted to us for our Outreach Programs. We request new members to change their user name if they use a last name. If they don't I just figure that's unfortunate. However, we'll delete any last name in a post.
Please remember OpSec is in place until their boots are on U.S. soil - OpSec covers everything under guideline 8 - there are many varied and specific examples of each: http://marinefamilynetwork.com/page/guidelines-1
"All content must conform to military and troop Operations Security. Troop is defined as a group of military personnel. Do not discuss troop operations including movement, missions, logistics, numbers, locations, dates and morale. ...."
Examples of what shouldn't be posted in an online community, per OpSec, would be the specific date a Marine deploys (the unit is in the air during that time - troop movement), that his unit is going from Base x to base y in Afghan. or wherever (troop movement), that the homecoming date from a deployment is z (no dates), that the next port a MEU is going to is ___, that the Recruits from MCRD San Diego are leaving the base on a specific date to got to ___ for training (troop movement, even in the U.S.), his company will be away from base on a mission for 3 weeks (no missions, no dates/time frame), there are 51 in his company deployed to Afghan (no numbers), his battalion is traveling from Camp Lejeune to 29 Palms for Mojave Desert on June 1 (no dates)...
As far as closed social media groups - nothing is private on the internet. This site is basically a public forum - with trained moderators. This group is closed to public view. Meaning non-Marine Parents members cannot see this group unless they first join Marine Parents and then join/follow this group.
We edit or delete anything that violates our guidelines - especially OpSec related. The information just is not available for anyone.
No dates posted please, nor days of the week or anything that hints at when they'll return. Also, nothing that says they're in the air, no names of locations that may be refueling stops on their return - it is considered large troop movement when they are in flight.
Merry Christmas and/or Happy Holidays, Our Marine is deployed and for the first time we don't know where. He made the effort to call his wife, us and his brothers today. Thank you USO. We went to church this morning and we are grateful for everyone who remembered and prayed for service members and first responders.
So glad that you and yours heard from your Marine today, charliep. Deployments are tough enough when you know where they are. My prayers for his and all of his Marine brothers, worldwide, safe return.
Merry Christmas...Happy Hannukah to all!
