Does anyone know who you talk to about getting your credits from the Marines for your college application?
Hope all our Alaska parents are ok after the earthquake.
Hope all you East Coast parents are safe & warm.
I hope all our Marines at LeJeune are warm too. lol
And Julie, there are a couple of other points, he is free. That is how he lived before the Marines adopted him and that was his choice. Secondly, He has probably lived longer this way than if he had been left in Afghanistan.
Sigh. No, but we never give up hope. He was shot in the head in Afghanistan and crawled off, and the Marines thought that was it for him. He showed up a month later, and was ready to patrol again with his Marines. Central Texas is filled with large open watering holes, lots of woods, and Afghani Kuchi dogs are a canny, self-sufficient lot. Kuchi is a breed unique to Afghanistan, named after the nomadic tribe of the same name. They forage for themselves, lope along for hours with the tribe, are very gentle with and protective of old folks and children. Kujo used to leap into the Helmand river and come up with a fish for lunch, and occasionally jumped the 7-foot wall of a compound to grab a chicken. He was not allowed on base, so he dug himself a deep hole every night and slept in it until the Marines appeared at the gate. If any dog could survive for several years on his own, it would be Kujo. We are heartened every time we read a story of a dog discovered 5 years later, due to his microchip. Kujo is chipped. And there has been a mysterious appearance of very Kuchi-lookng dogs in central Texas :). My son is very philosophical about it all. Even if Kujo was shot by a rancher while raiding his hen house (which is quite possible), he had an amazing two years of love and comfort in America. Just as important in my mind, the Marines did the right thing for their own hearts by bringing him home.
Julie, was he ever found?
I'm a big fan of the Nowzad group, a shelter and rescue organization based in Kabul, started by a British Royal Marine after he rescued a dog from that kids were throwing rocks at in Nowzad. That agency helped my son bring home the stray dog that had adopted his squad while they were serving in Helmand province. They are awesome. The squad named the dog Kujo, and I've posted his story here before: http://marinefamilynetwork.com/profiles/blogs/if-you-missed-the-kujo
