I'm new to this.  My grandson is scheduled to leave for boot camp on Dec. 3, 2012 - Parris Island.  Are the boys assigned to a special platoon, I guess is the correct word, right off the bat or do they get assigned after basic - or after something later on?  Thanks,

Dear nightsong....I know it all seems like too much to bear right now, not hearing anything....but the best thing you can do for your grandson is to keep writing to him to make him feel like everything is ok at home....They told us that our Marines will begin to feel homesick and we should just keep writing to them to reassure them that we at home love them and are so proud of the decision they have made for their family and their country!....You will be the time you write all the letters to him.. to reassure him, you forget about yourself and soon bootcamp will be over with and on to MCT and the next set of "prayers"....God bless you and your Marine family from ours.....

You should not expect to hear from him for a long time if that. My grandson sent maybe 3 postcards out to his mom and dad but no one else.  They are totally immersed in training, training, and more training. If they are going to make it through boot camp, they have to stay on point and all of the time. One thing that his dad did that he could receive was to send down some pre-addressed , postage applied postcards.  He is busy becoming part of his new "family"..this is a very tough time for all of you, so hang in there..I worried constantly and when he was supposed to have leave at the end and they didn't get released until late in the day, i was heartsick.  He may get a call off now and then, and i think it's Sundays? Keep praying and we all here will pray for your recruit and his success. My grandson made it through boot earning his first stripe before graduation, he passed his MCT training and is now in MOS and almost finished with that.  It is not clear if he will go for more training? or be deployed.  So Grandma, it's not YOU! and I will tell you this, once this long 3 months is over and you see your grandson again, you will not believe the magnificent change that will take place in his physique, his attitude and his loyalty to his "brothers" and to the Corp.  SEMPER FI! OHRAH!

My son and daughter-in-law just got 'the form letter' telling them where to write. I am so glad it came today because everyone was anxiously waiting! I guess I need to get busy writing!

Geez, I am sorry, I don't know the exact time frame, I'm going to say almost a year? But they had other things going on, lost a little angel-baby girl 2 days before she was due to come into this world.  They are in recovery mode now and preparing to move to Fl from SC.  As my grand sons Dad says who was a Sgt in the Corp, the Corp takes it's own time.  Will keep your grand daughter in prayer!

Thanks Nana for your reply... How long after the surgeries did you nephew have to wait to be Medically discharged?

Comment by nana on March 7, 2012 at 7:07pm

So sorry to hear about your grand daughter! My nephew was injured in Afghanistan , went through several surgeries and did not respond well , he has been medically discharged after a very long time.  Hopefully, her injuries are not permanent and she will be able to finish up with her MOS and off to do what her heart desires!

My Grandaughter is in Pensacola FL for her MOS last September, she injured her knee, had her Medboard papers sent to DC 3 months ago and hasn't heard yet what her status is!!! She really wanted to make a career in the Marines, anyone else with a or gone thru a situation like this?
