Thank you very much for the responses, it's appreciated. He knows quitting is not an option. I've told him that quitting anything will never help him in life, and boot camp is no exception. I just sent him another letter for Sunday that provided some information this infamous wall, and how its normal.

Comment by 1~ksMarinemom (Kerin) on January 6, 2015 at 10:00am

Hang in there, the wall is something that happens. My son didn't hit it until he was at MOS of all places. A fight is something that happens I am sure it's not the first nor will it be the last at MCRD's.

We are their cheerleaders and also at times having to put our foot where it needs to go. I am writing as a mom, not a moderator (even though they can be the same LOL). Things happen, things we don't know and don't need or want to know; they just happen.

You know your son and know how to push when needed and when to hold them and say it's ok. Even when they need the comfort it still has to be done with encouragement during boot camp. They signed up for a reason, they only need to raise  their hand and say "I am done" and it's over. He hasn't done that! So, he wants to stay he just needed to vent. Your boot camp group will be a great source of support make sure you join the group as there could be others in the same situation and together y'all will get through this bump in the road.

Best wishes :)

They say their current mood/emotions lasts for such a short amount of time. While you're reading one letter and the emotion in it he probably feels different by the time you are reading it from when he wrote it. I would keep staying positive like you have been :) prayers sent his way and your way momma. 1st phase is the hardest! He will do great!

Thank you, Kerin. That was very helpful, and exactly what I needed to read. My Father was a Marine from back in the 50's, and he always told me what it was like, but I never got the parent perspective, or details on what to expect. I feel better knowing he is probably just hitting "the wall", and its a normal part of the process.

Here are two blogs worth reading. Keep up the good work of being his cheerleader; and I am sure he wont get into another fight.

Best wishes to you and your recruit. I hope and will pray the next letter will be better; they usually are.

Hello,

My Son is in the 4th week of boot at Parris Island. He has written me letters every week so far, but they seem to be getting increasingly discouraged and depressed. I know they tear you down, so they can build you back up. Is this a normal part of the process he is experiencing? I had been being supportive etc in my previous letters, but in this last one I had to bump it up and tell him to man-up, quit whining and finish what he started. Apparently he got in a fight with another recruit. What should I do, or say?
