Comment by marinegirlfriend11 on May 16, 2012 at 2:00pm Thanks Blue. I knew it was going to be hard. And I knew I was going to miss him. But I didn't think it was going to be this hard. I did get a message from him today on facebook. So it's a little better knowing he is okay!
Comment by Blue on May 15, 2012 at 3:04pm Hang in there girlfriend! Just take it one day at a time! And keep yourself busy!
Comment by marinegirlfriend11 on May 15, 2012 at 3:02pm My boyfriend deployed to Afghanistan. And it is alot harder then i thought it would be!
Comment by nevergiveup on April 29, 2012 at 1:25am @peepslady: I read that even with the phone off and the battery in they can be tracked. I'm not sure my son was able to take his. I found out it wouldn't work anyway without an international sim card. I use motomail to send messages and facebook. Constantly watching for that Green Dot!! :)
Comment by NVmy3sons on April 28, 2012 at 11:37am My son is also currently "in the dirt" Afghanistan. We have kept in touch through messaging on Facebook of all places. I write him a letter almost every day just to tell him whats going on here and ask how things are there. He cant say to much but it is so much easier for them to log on and read about normalcy.
Comment by peepslady on April 28, 2012 at 10:27am Good comment SocalMom! i wrote all the important numbers on an index card, and 'laminated' it with clear packing tape on both sides. That went into the first box i sent out to him.
My son is currently deployed to the "sand box" his cell phone was taken away when they got there, no big deal because it wouldn't have worked but it had all his contacts in it, so make sure you tell them to keep numbers they want in their wallet or some where else.
Comment by peepslady on April 28, 2012 at 10:02am some are not allowed to take the cell phones. the taliban can track their positions through the gps on the phones, and pictures taken with the hpones have the location embedded in them, which is also used by the enemy. i think your son will be told if he can take his phone or not. mine could not.
Bakermom....our son is home on R&R leave now, and will be going back soon. How did the textnow work once they are in Afghanistan? Do the need wi-fi accessibility for it to work? We are hoping that this will be an option, but he does not have wi-fi where he's at.
Comment by bakermom5944 on April 27, 2012 at 5:31pm Yes they can take their phones, but they don't work. My son did get the texting app which is called. Textnow. Hope you Marines can get the app. so you can text. Mine is coming home !! Can hardly stand it!! SO Excited!! God Bless All.
