This group is intended for discussions on Afghanistan deployments (topics of a general nature) rather than about specific deployed units. To connect with a specific unit please click here – USMC Units– to go to that group page where you will find your Marine’s deployed unit.

The "US Marines in Afghanistan" news feed at the bottom of this page is new to this group. Please note we do NOT have the ability to select specific articles that appear in the feed; it comes from a generalized news feed.

Semper Gumby!!!

Thanks for the information Sandy. It now makes more sense how my sons had such different leave situations after their deployments.

Deborah Anne, We all know how that feeling is. It was bad enough when our oldest deployed. But when our youngest (and the one closest to me) left, I know my depression got much worse. But the time when they come back was such a tremendous uplift for both my wife and I.

God bless and protect all of our warriors, wherever they are, and whatever their duty.

Thanks, Sandy.  And then there is that qualifier "it depends" on needs of the Corps.

Here's an excerpt from our informational page on homecomings - it's under "possible procedure" a little past 1/2way down the page:

  • Most units will schedule a unit block leave of up to 30 days.
  • Marines will have the option of taking time off during the block leave.
  • Marines will use their accrued leave time, and in some instances, the Marines are allowed to "borrow against" future accrued leave time.
  • Leave time varies from Marine to Marine, as well as from unit to unit....

So it's pretty much a mixed bag, I'd say ; )

With pride in and prayers for all who serve our country,

Sandy (1~sandyr)

My understanding is that the Pre and Post Deployment leave is NOT permissive leave that is deducted from accrued EARNED leave.

The timing of DEPLOYMENT (Combat) leave IS determined by command, and the entire unit MAY be on leave at the same time, or (if there are few enough people involved) the COMBAT leave MAY be taken when it is best for the combatant.

God bless, Paul
