Yes, I think we will try it out and see.  Like you and said, what is there to lose by trying.  Thanks for the input!!

Donna, So, if we both down load WhatsApp to our phones, we should be able to keep in contact with each other at no cost? and just use it as we normally would text?  ~Susan

How it works

WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. WhatsApp Messenger is available for iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, Windows Phone and Nokia and yes, those phones can all message each other! Because WhatsApp Messenger uses the same internet data plan that you use for email and web browsing, there is no cost to message and stay in touch with your friends.

In addition to basic messaging WhatsApp users can create groups, send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages.

I believe Mark Z. (founder/owner) of Facebook is buying this app for a lot of $$$

No problem. You might want to try it out while he is still here so you'll know how to use it. Then if he has access to wifi you'll know exactly what to do.

Thanks so much Rob....I really appreciate the explanation!!

Ya that's what I'm saying. And you would also have to connect to wifi to use that app to text him. I know normally you don't need to be connected to wifi to text or get on the internet but in this case you would have to.

Thanks, Rob. Like I said, I am not very well versed on Smartphones and iphones.  I know we can connect to wifi if we want and if it is available but we don't have to in order to use the internet or text. But you are saying that he would need to be on a base/FOB that has wifi in order to use his phone?  Sorry to be so uninformed :(

There are apps out there where you can text and also call. That's what I used when I deployed. However you need wifi. If they stay on leather neck you can get it but there is a process you have to go through.
